What do you think? I remember a former CEO of ours that did this when he and another Director were in the market. He being a great negotiator was able to write a number on a paper and tell the sales guy that they would take both for the number offered.

I have been thinking about doing a 2 car deal. My wife has been wanting a specific car for some time. This may depend on the dealer and brand of car I would guess. Still any one try it and ask for an incentive? Is it a good bargaining chip or is it better to work both deals independently?

For additional information, we live in Southern California and in an area this large just about any brand has multiple dealerships within an hour of our home.

there's no harm in trying to work that angle.

Make your offer contingent upon the two car deal and see what you get for a response.

You still have the ability to shop your deals at other places to see how the bottom line compares.

Whatever you do, do it at the end of the month. Their eyes will pop out of their head if they see you as a "2 for 1" buyer if they are trying to hit sales targets.

Yes end of the month is the idea if you want a good deal, if they need to hit there numbers then it doesn't matter if your buying one car or ten, they are going to give you a good deal to hit there numbers. If they hit there sales quota then the deal usually is not as good. The best thing to do is go in about a week before the end of the month, negotiate, and then LEAVE. You have to leave and walk away, if they need the sale a sales manager will usually call you a day or two later and offer more usually to get you in to sign the paper work.

Assuming you both want a car from the same brand; then yes, it will give you some leverage. If you were buying the same model, it may work out even better. I would go in upfront and tell them what you are looking to accomplish. While the deal is technically two separate transactions and the overall deal won't be any better then what you could potentially do individually, buying two will make the whole process smoother. So, don't exepct to get a "better than best" deal because you are buying two, but getting the "best" deal will be easier.

Yeah. They will sell you 2 cars at their very lowest price, with a little negotiating, just to boost their numbers.
The salesman and his manager work off commission, selling you 2 cars for the lowest price is better than selling one car at a markup.

Go for it. I say work the deal as you are buying 2 for 1 but do keep your eyes on what each is actually costing in the end. Sometimes certain models have better incentives and sometimes a higher priced car with more options actually has more room to negotiate than the same stripped down one has.
Buying at the end of the month is good advice since dealers are trying to meet goals but buying at the beginning might be a good deal too since they are trying to get the month going strong. If you are looking at leftover 2013's you can get a even better deal.

Lots of people say they are going to do that but just remember you can onky contract one deal at a time.

Thank's everyone for your input. It turns out that in the end we only felt good about getting the one car. My wife is the new owner of a Honda Accord. This is her first new car ever. She loves it and has wanted one for some time. A few other cars that she had wanted were the Nissan Altima and the Honda Pilot. With our big family and how we love our Chevy Astro the kids did not like the idea of letting that van go. You would have thought they would have loved the idea of getting a new Pilot. The Pilot would have been more money anyway so I am happy with her loving the Accord. I am inheriting the Astro and am OK with that. We only need it when we are all going somewhere at the same time.
